What is hardwood plywood?

Hardwood plywood is a multi-ply panel made from veneers bonded together with alternating grain direction. In Australia, "hardwood plywood" often refers to general-purpose plywood with hardwood face veneers (and a range of core constructions) used widely in building, fitout and fabrication. It's valued for strength-to-weight, durability, and cost-effective sheet construction.

  • Why it's used
Strong, stable sheet for structural and general fabrication
  • Good machining performance for repeats and kits
  • Cost-effective substrate for paint, laminate and coverings
  • Common applications
Gussets, bracing plates and construction components
  • Joinery carcasses, shelving and fitout parts
  • Panels, partitions, backers and protective boards
  • Notes for cutting
Router cutting is preferred for consistent edges and accuracy
  • Laser cutting suits thin sheets only (adhesives can char)
  • Face/core quality affects edge appearance and voids

Tip: If you need a "good-looking exposed edge", birch plywood is usually the better choice. If you need a robust, cost-effective sheet for structural or general-purpose parts, hardwood plywood is often the best fit.

Hardwood plywood thickness guide

We cut hardwood plywood in standard trade thicknesses. CNC routing is the main process; CO₂ laser cutting is used selectively for thin sheets where fine detail is required.

Common thicknesses for CNC and laser work
Thickness Best for Process
3 mm Light panels, patterns and small parts (where available) Laser (selective) / CNC
6 mm Backers, display panels, lightweight components Laser (selective) / CNC
9 mm Bracing plates, substrates and general panels CNC
12 mm Panels, fitout parts and construction components CNC
15 mm Stronger panels, ribs and medium-load components CNC
18 mm Cabinet components, shelving and structural bracing parts CNC
21–25 mm Heavy-duty panels and high-load components CNC

Sheet capacity: up to 3000 × 1500 mm on our beds. If you need a specific face grade, structural rating or exterior glue line, add it in your notes so we can confirm availability and suitability.

Why choose hardwood plywood?

Cost-effective strength for trade work

Hardwood plywood offers an excellent balance of strength, stability and price, making it a common choice for construction components, fitout panels and general fabrication where a practical substrate is the priority.

Versatile finish options

Hardwood plywood is often used as a paint-grade or laminate substrate. CNC routed edges and accurate holes help your parts assemble cleanly before any finishing steps.

Great for repeat kits and site work

For repeated gussets, bracing plates or panel sets, CNC cutting gives consistent results. We can also label and pack kits by area or stage to reduce sorting time onsite.

Specific grade requirements

Need a specific hardwood plywood grade (structural/exterior), face quality or certification? Add it in the notes or upload a spec sheet and we'll confirm the closest match we can supply.

More about hardwood plywood

Hardwood plywood is widely used across building and fitout work because it offers strong panels at an accessible price point. Because "hardwood plywood" covers a range of face grades and core types, specifying the grade matters for visual finishes and structural applications.

Allow for internal corner radii on slots and pockets (router tool diameter). For structural plates and gussets, keep edge distances around holes practical and avoid very narrow webs that could split during handling.

Face grade impacts patches and the finished appearance. Core quality affects voids and edge consistency. If the plywood will be visible (or if you need a structural/exterior product), specify the grade/rating you require in your notes.

We stack and strap panels, then pack in cartons or on pallets depending on size and quantity. For larger jobs, we can label and pack kits by area or stage to make installs faster.

Most hardwood plywood cutting jobs dispatch in 1–5 business days once drawings, grade specifications and quantities are confirmed. Larger structural kits or multi-site programs may take longer, but we will confirm realistic timeframes before you commit.

DXF/DWG preferred; AI/SVG/PDF (vector) accepted. Units in mm; specify plywood grade and thickness in notes. Upload via the instant quote.
