Materials & thickness guide

Typical materials we cut for packaging, POS and retail display work.

Internal production limits for flat cutting

Paper & board

  • Folding carton board & SBS
  • Corrugated cardboard (E/B flute and similar)
  • Display board & screen board
  • Greyboard and chipboard
  • Kraft and specialty packaging boards

Typically processed on the digital knife table for clean creases and perforations without burning.

Plastics & rigid sheet

  • Corflute and PP fluted sheet
  • PVC foamboard (Forex / Foam PVC)
  • Polypropylene sheet & PP honeycomb
  • PETG, PVC and clear display plastics
  • Acrylic panels for premium POS elements

Cut by CO₂ laser, digital knife or CNC router depending on thickness and finish requirements.

Foams & specialty

  • EVA and PE foam packaging inserts
  • Display foams and laminates
  • Rubber & soft gasket materials (non-industrial)
  • Card + foam composites for presentation kits
  • Adhesive-backed materials (case by case)

Foam thickness and density affect cut speed and edge quality — share specs so we can recommend the best process.

Capabilities at a Glance

Processes for Packaging & POS

  • Digital knife cutting for cartons, boards and foam
  • CO₂ laser cutting for plastics, acrylic and fine detail
  • CNC router cutting for thicker rigid sheet and panels
  • Fiber laser cutting for brackets and metal POS hardware

Typical Thickness Range

  • Paper & boards — 200–2000 gsm typical
  • Corrugated cardboard — E/B flute & similar
  • Rigid plastics — up to ~10 mm (material dependent)
  • Foams — up to ~50 mm (case by case)
  • Metal hardware — thin brackets and plates

Values shown are our normal production window for clean edges and predictable fit. Talk to us about anything unusual.

Accuracy

  • Digital knife cutting: typically ±0.5 mm on most packaging work
  • Laser cutting: finer detail possible on acrylics and plastics
  • Kerf compensation applied so key dimensions match the CAD

Finish

  • Clean cuts that protect printed surfaces and artwork
  • Creasing, perforations and score lines for folding
  • Nesting to minimise waste on expensive substrates

Sheet & Board Size

We cut packaging boards, display sheets and plastics up to 1500 × 3000 mm. Larger displays can be tiled and joined on site or in your finishing department.

Why packaging & retail teams use us

Trade partner for print & display

We are set up for trade clients — print shops, display houses and converters who need reliable cutting without competing for the same customers. You keep the printing and finishing; we keep the boards moving through our knives, lasers and routers.

Short lead times for campaigns

Retail campaigns and product launches run on tight calendars. We quote with realistic lead times and communicate clearly so your packs and displays land on store dates, not after.

Prototype to production

Use us for one-off mockups, sample kits and test runs before committing to hard tooling. Once designs are proven, we can support ongoing digital production or help you refine files for die-making.

Material-agnostic approach

Because we run knife cutting, CO₂ laser, fiber laser and CNC router, we can select the right process for each job instead of forcing everything through one machine. That means better edges, better fit and sensible unit costs.

Sydney based, national reach

We cut from our Botany workshop and ship across Australia. For local clients, you can drop in to view tests, approve samples and refine tricky details in person.

No CAD? We can help

Simple plates and brackets can often be drawn and quoted the same day.

More about cutting for Packaging & POS

Laser Cutting Experts is built around flat cutting technologies — digital knife, CO₂ laser, fiber laser and CNC router — which makes us a strong fit for packaging and point-of-sale work. Instead of running everything through a single die cutter, we use the process that best suits your board, plastic or foam.

We act as a cutting back-end for trade customers. You can send printed sheets for cut-only, or let us source substrates and deliver finished blanks back to your plant. That means you can take on more complex shapes, short runs and test campaigns without tying up your own equipment.

For short to medium runs, prototyping and complex shapes, digital knife cutting is often faster and cheaper than commissioning a steel rule die. There is no tooling cost, changeovers are fast and small tweaks can be made at the file level instead of rebuilding tooling.

Corflute, display board, carton board, PVC foamboard and acrylic are common choices for POS. Each material has a different feel, cost and environmental profile — we can talk through what makes sense for your brand, budget and campaign duration.

Clean dielines make digital cutting more accurate and reliable. Keep cut, crease and perforation lines on separate layers or colours, avoid duplicated paths and ensure artwork is correctly trapped to the finished shape. If needed, we can help prepare production-ready files from your designer's working artwork.

Launch with a pilot run, capture feedback from stores and then adjust your dielines if necessary. Once finalised, we can either keep running digitally at scale or support you in handing the design to a die maker for very large, repetitive volumes.

Our Packaging & POS cutting service in Sydney is geared towards tight deadlines, last‑minute changes and real-world store conditions. We understand that displays must look sharp on day one but also survive freight, unpacking and a full promotion cycle.

Typical projects range from simple shelf strips and wobblers through to complete in‑store campaigns with matching packaging, header cards and displays. We also help brands refine packaging for e‑commerce — especially foam inserts and protective fitments that protect product without blowing out shipping weights.

If you have upcoming packaging, POS or retail display work, send through your dielines or a rough brief. We can suggest materials, cutting methods and small design tweaks that will help your project run smoothly from the studio to the shop floor.

FAQ

Yes. We specialise in flat components — boards, inserts, panels and blanks. We do not offer box gluing or complete display fabrication in-house, but we can refer you to partners if you need full turnkey solutions.

Yes. Digital knife cutting is ideal for printed sheets because it avoids burn marks and minimises edge charring. We handle UV direct print, offset and digital prints carefully to protect the finished surface.

DXF, AI, SVG and vector PDF are all fine for dielines. Keep cut, crease and perforation lines on separate layers or colours and supply artwork at 1:1 scale in millimetres where possible.

Absolutely. Many clients run several prototype iterations with us before committing to a national rollout. We can help refine the dieline so that the final version works well on both digital tables and traditional die cutters.

Most jobs ship within 1–5 business days from final file approval, depending on complexity, volume and material availability. If you have a hard in‑store date, let us know early so we can plan capacity around it.

We cut and ship from Botany in Sydney, supplying packaging, POS and retail clients across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and other major centres. Pickup is available from the workshop for local customers.
