MDF thickness guide

We typically process MDF and moisture resistant MDF sheets in standard trade thicknesses and sheet sizes. The table below reflects thicknesses we commonly cut. Exact availability depends on grade, core type and supplier, and can be confirmed when quoting.

Working ranges for common MDF sheets
MDF thickness Typical use
12 mm MDF Wall panels, backing boards, light cabinetry and display components.
16 mm MDF Standard cabinet carcasses, shelving and joinery elements.
18 mm MDF / moisture resistant MDF Benchtops, heavier cabinets and work surfaces (MR for wet areas).
25 mm MDF and above Thicker feature elements, steps, oversized shelves and special details.

*Thickness ranges above are indicative for MDF panels used in joinery, signage and fitout. Our CNC router beds accept sheets up to 3000 × 1500 mm. If you need different sizes, specialty MDF grades or pre-primed boards, mention this in your enquiry so we can confirm availability.

Why use our MDF cutting service?

Joinery-focused CNC router cutting

Our CNC routers are set up specifically for MDF and moisture resistant MDF joinery work. Tooling, feeds and nesting are tuned for clean edges, strong hold-down and reliable alignment in cabinet and panel assembly.

Set up for production and repeat work

Once your cabinet libraries, panel sets and hardware positions are dialled in, we can efficiently repeat jobs with predictable pricing and timing — ideal for multi-site rollouts, franchise fitouts and standard joinery packages.

Help preparing cutting files and nests

We can work from DXF/DWG, cabinet exports or sketches, help optimise sheet usage and nesting, and suggest tweaks so parts are practical to machine, handle and finish. This is especially useful when moving from manual cutting to CNC-based production.

Trade-ready workflow

Clear specs on sheet thickness, MDF grade, edge requirements and hardware, plus realistic lead times and consistent re-runs. We are geared to support joiners, builders, shopfitters and signage companies who need reliable MDF routing support.

More about MDF cutting & joinery

Open the items below for more detail on MDF cutting, design tips and how standard MDF and moisture resistant MDF compare for different projects.

For CNC-routed MDF parts, allow for router tool diameter on internal corners, avoid very narrow webs that could break during machining, and clearly show hinge and hardware positions. Confirm finished sizes after edge-banding or laminates if these affect clearances between doors and panels.

Standard MDF is ideal for dry areas and detailed routing, especially where panels will be painted or laminated. Moisture resistant MDF (MR MDF) is better for kitchens, bathrooms and areas exposed to humidity. We can help match the MDF grade to the environment and finish requirements of your project.

MDF components are heavy and benefit from logical packing. We typically stack and strap panels, then pack in cartons or on pallets depending on size and quantity. For larger jobs, we can sequence loads to match site stages so the right cabinets and panels arrive at the right time.

Most MDF cutting jobs dispatch in 1–5 business days once artwork, materials and quantities are confirmed. Larger fitouts, multi-site rollouts or complex cabinet libraries may take longer, but we will confirm realistic timeframes before you commit.

DXF/DWG preferred; AI/SVG/PDF (vector) accepted. Units in mm; include hardware positions and edge details. Upload via the instant quote.
